To search for threads containing companion and matrix,  ( "-t all" for searching all terms)
 mathlinks -t all -k companion matrix

To search for threads that contains words companion and matrix and are written by John Doe and then show results with first 300 characters, 
 mathlinks -t all -k companion matrix -a John Doe -c 300

-k is first letter of 'keyword'.
-a is first letter of 'author'.
-c is first letter of 'characters'.
